Always There To Help

March 31, 2008 / by rmurph0808

Everybody in this world likes to think that they have someone who will always be there, no matter what the situation is, to lend a helping hand or maybe just to talk things through.  This source often may come from a variety of people depending on who you associate with and the intentions that these people might have for you.  This can also come from an activity that you are into and something that might sooth the soul.  The source of most of my inspirations comes from my mom.  Ever since my dad passed away from cancer I have noticed that my mom has and is willing to do just about anything to ensure that my brother and I have the best chances available at succeeding in whatever it is that we choose to do.  While reading the novel A Question of Power by Bessie Head it is very clear to me that Elizabeth does not have all of the same advantages that I had as a child growing up.

The two main sources of hope for Elizabeth that I noticed throughout the novel seemed to come from an American named Tom and her son Shorty.  Tom is essentially the man that helps pull Elizabeth out of the state of her visions and sickness while she is in the hospital.  Although Tom had originally planned to join a monastery but instead decided that agriculture would be a place that his purpose could be better fulfilled.  It is through the agriculture field were Tom and Elizabeth meet and end up having a meaningful friendship.  In all honesties sake this is the person I fell that Elizabeth was really able to lean on.  He was there through thick and thin even though at times it seemed things could not get much worse.  He was maybe the best thing to ever come into her life.

The other source of hope that I picked up on came from her son Shorty.  After one of Elizabeth’s visions telling her that her son was going to die was when Elisabeth’s motherly instinct took over.  She realized that her son could not live his life that she was so unfairly thrown in to.  She was not going to stand by and let these visions ruin her life as well as her son’s life.  Elizabeth was the able to free her body of all the demons that had been haunting her and to take on the true responsibility of becoming a parent to a wonderful child.

Without any of the sources of hope and inspiration it is easy to see how one is able to slip through the cracks of society.  The best advantage one can give themselves in this life is to surround themselves with as many honest and loving hearts as they can.  This source for me has been my mother, for Elizabeth it was Tom and her son Shorty.  I know that I would be willing to just about anything for my friends and family, my only hope is that they will be there for me if my time for need ever comes.
